Vote has opened for Old Basing Scout hut cash bid

11-2011-Wk46_Scouts_celebrate_SHORT_PICThe vote has opened for a community project bidding for £60,000 worth of cash to revamp a derelict scout hut.

As previously reported, The Old Basing Scout and Guides have proposed to rebuild the Milkingpen Lane scout hut.

The competition is run by Energyshare, a joint venture between energy firm British Gas and not-for-profit organisation River Cottage.

Four of the shortlisted projects will be awarded a slice of Energyshare’s £500,000 and the winners will be decided by the public vote.

Stephen Thair, chairman of the Old Basing scout group executive committee, said: “This is a real opportunity to do something amazing in our community. Our Scout and Guide groups are very enthusiastic about all things outdoors and active.

“It will be fantastic to see our young people leading the way in our village with this renewable energy scheme incorporated within our new thermally efficient building.”

The plan is for the Scout group to build a new HQ called the Baden Powell centre complete with roof solar panels, a 15kW ground source heat pump, new ventilation system, under-floor heating, rainwater harvesting system and solar tube lighting system.
