Youngsters at a Basingstoke nursery dressed up as members of the emergency services during a safety awareness campaign.
Children at Kiddi Caru Day Nursery in Broadmere Road, Beggarwood, donned the uniforms of firefighters, police officers and doctors on June 24.
The day marked the end of the Child Accident Prevention Trust’s (CAPT) Child Safety Week.
Deputy nursery manager, Kimberley Snuggs, said the campaign was important for tots to learn about their safety.
“Child Safety Week is about getting children involved with safety. It is really important to start instilling the message from a young age,” she said. “Youngsters do take it on board but in different ways so we have to try really hard to get them involved.”
Police officers visited the nursery to perform a puppet show to highlight the dagers of talking to strangers.
Other activities included a tour of Beggarwood with youngsters tasked with spotting hazards and coming up with ways to avoid them.
But Mrs Snuggs said that the fancy dress day had been the highlight of the exercise.
She said: “If you get children interested in safety then they will learn and think about it.
“All the staff here have put in a huge amount of effort in dressing up and driving the message home.
“It’s hugely important getting children aware of their environment and knowing who are safe people in the community.”
Child safety week was organised by CAPT to drive down the number of serious accidents involving children or young people.
Chief executive Katrina Phillips said: “Every year, far too many children are badly injured, disabled or killed in preventable accidents. Child Safety Week gives us the opportunity to put accident prevention at the top of everyone’s list.”
