Basingstoke youngsters were given a chance to train alongside England rugby legend Austin Healey.
Boys and girls aged from seven to 17 got a chance to learn from Austin, who has notched up 51 caps for England and two from the British and Irish Lions.
Now commentating for ESPN, he joined the London Irish Holiday Masterclass held at Basingstoke Rugby Club for two days from Thursday, September 2.
Austin said: “It's a great chance to get out in the community and play some rugby with the kids. It is great seeing kids who are really keen to play the game.
“They are turning out today with all the gear and just as much enthusiasm. We hope that we can provide them with a few good tips on playing the game we all love.”
Youngsters from all over the county came for the two day course, learning the ropes with coaches from Premiership side London Irish, who play at the Madejski Stadium in Reading.
London Irish Community Rugby Coach, Ian Price, 26, said that the course was about teaching a range of rugby skills, from basic ball handling skills for the youngsters, to advanced running moves for the older players.
He said: “Even over such a short time we have seen a huge improvement in the standard they are playing at. We teach skills that they can apply to a game, not just in an exercise, and we are seeing that happen.
“What we do with communities like here in Basingstoke is really important for the future of the game, this way we can get people excited about rugby as well as find a potential future England player.”
Austin said: “In Basingstoke I have seen a huge amount of potential. Everyone here is very good and I have my eyes on a number who I think have real potential.”
Ten-year-old Harrison Pape, from Andover, who plays as fly half for Clatford Primary School, said: “It is a really good day. Its tiring, playing from 9.30 to 3.30 but still really good fun and it is amazing having the chance to play with Austin Healey. I am excited to be starting the new rugby season and using what he taught me.”
