Police foil digger thefts

crime-policemenPolice have foiled an international criminal gang’s attempt to smuggle thousands of pounds of stolen equipment out of the country.

Specialist cops from Hampshire Constabulary’s commercial vehicles unit stopped a truck carrying two diggers worth £23,000 on the A34 outside Whitchurch earlier this month.

After background checks officers found the orange Hitachi EX30, and the Takeuchi TB125 were diggers stolen from two separate sites in Oldham, Greater Manchester.

Odiham Cricket Club gutted by fire after break-in

IMG00223-20120121-1536Crooks who broke into a cricket clubhouse in Odiham have been blamed for sparking a fire that gutted the inside.

Members of the 250-year-old Odiham and Greywell Cricket Club said they were distraught as they tried to salvage priceless memorabilia destroyed in the blaze.

The future of the wooden building remains uncertain as assessors consider this week whether to tear down the badly damaged building.

Teenager attacked in Basingstoke underpass

A teenage boy was attacked by a middle age man on January 6, and police have issued an appeal in a bid to trace his assailant.

According to detectives, the 17-year-old victim was confronted in an underpass on Hatch Warren Lane, near Beethoven Road, at around 9pm.

He was attacked by a white man, believed to be in his late 30s. The teen was not injured.

Driver jailed for causing death of OAP

1-2012-Wk3_Operation_WinceyA drink-driver has been jailed for causing the death of a Whitchurch pensioner.

Thomas Stewart, of Azalea Court, Andover, was sentenced to six years behind bars after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving at Winchester Crown Court on Friday.

The 40-year-old was twice over the limit when he collided head-on with a car driven by 80-year-old Whitchurch man, Ronald Birch.

Teen robbed of wallet at knifepoint

crime-policemenA E-fit has been released after a teenager was robbed at knifepoint in Basingstoke town centre.

Detectives are calling for witnesses to come forward with any information.  According to officers, shortly before 1pm on January 11, a 17-year-old boy was walking through the New Road underpass between Caston’s Yard car park and the back of McDonald’s restaurant at the top of town.
