Vicar 'shocked' at church fire

The Vicar of a church in Old Basing has been left ‘shocked’ after a fire was started in St Mary’s Church, in Church Lane.

The blaze, which began behind the rear pews, did not spread but damage was caused to the inside of the church. Police are now appealing for any witnesses who may have see someone enter the church sometime between 3.30pm and 5.20pm on Thursday July 8.

Man threatened with knife in town

A man was threatened with a knife while walking along an underpass in the town last month.

The 24-year-old was approached by three men on Cliddesden Road, near Queen Mary’s College, between 7pm and 8pm on Tuesday, June 22. The group asked him for a cigarette and when he said he didn’t have any the men demanded his wallet and threatened him with the blade.

Nothing was handed over and the men walked off.

E-Fit released to trace dog attacker

Police have released an e-fit image of a man who kicked a teenager’s dog in the town last month.

The incident occurred at around 3pm on Thursday, June 24 when the 16- year-old and her pet were walking through Russell Howard Park in South Ham. The man’s dog bit hers on the lip before the man kicked it in the head and knocked it over. He then threatened the girl before walking off.

Vehicles targeted for precious metal, police believe

Police fear vehicles in the borough could be targeted following a spate of thefts this year.

Since May 11, catalytic converters have been stolen from cars, vans and 4x4s across the town. Officers believe the parts are then being sold for scrap, which can have a high value due to a small amount of precious metal inside used during the filtering process.

Vehicle owners are being advised, where possible, to park in a garage or secure compound, preferably well lit and monitored by CCTV. If this...

Arrest made in murder investigation

georgina-edmondsA murder investigation that has spanned more than two and a half years has seen a man arrested this week.

Georgina Edmonds was battered to death with her rolling pin having been tortured for her bank card pin number at her cottage in Brambridge in January 2008.

Now a 31-year-old has been arrested over the murder and was taken into police custody at 5am on Wednesday, June 30.
