Concerned residents can now get up to the minute information on crimes in their neighbourhoods.
On September 27 police chiefs heralded the launch of the CrimeReports website as a way to get people more involved with local policing.
The online venture is a partnership between Hampshire police, the county council, the fire service, the probation service and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
The organisations have pooled data on crimes, anti-social behaviour, emergencies, disputes and details of meet-and-greet surgeries with neighbourhood beat officers.
Hampshire County Council leader Ken Thornber said: “Never before has a crime mapping site provided this level of frequently updated detail and context about crimes and incidents in local communities.
“By working more closely together with our partners and residents living in local communities, we will be better positioned to target resources even more efficiently and effectively to help keep neighbourhoods safe and secure and help meet future challenges.”
The system is different to the national crime map database launched in February. The site plots daily reported incidents, while the national database lists incidents in the previous month.
From September 26 to September 29, the interactive map lists details of 117 incidents across Basingstoke. These included three assault, one collision and two vehicle thefts.
The venture is one of seven Government pilot sites exploring how communities can get more involved in local policing.
The service is free, and people can get email updates for their area daily, weekly, or monthly. To see the site in action, visit www.crimereports.co.uk
