Copper thieves on the prowl in Popley

crime-policemenThieves have hit areas of Popley in a spate of copper thefts.

There were 16 incidents of stolen copper piping in Carpenters Down and Shakespeare Road over the past month.

In nearly every case, the 15mm piping belonged to the boiler’s overflow system at the front or side of older style houses and varied from five to 10 feet in length.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information about the thefts.

“This has become a particular problem over the past month, and in the majority of cases, these thefts appear to be happening overnight; however they could also be happening during the day when the occupants are at work,” said Acting Sergeant Christopher Whittington, from the Basingstoke Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

“Have you seen anyone acting suspiciously or any unfamiliar vehicles in the area recently? Have you seen anyone apparently working on a property or removing copper piping? If so, please contact us.”

Anyone with any information should contact A/Sgt Whittington at Basingstoke police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
