Cyclist assault leads to plea from police

A cyclist suffered facial injuries after being attacked by a gang of three in the town last month.

The victim was travelling along Queen Mary Avenue and turned into the alleyway opposite Norden Close at 12.25am on Tuesday, February 23.

The 38-year-old noticed two men and made them aware of his presence so he could pass but as he did so, he was punched on the head from behind by a third man.

He was then punched in the face and told to give the gang what he had.

He offered his bike but they refused to take it.

Having called for help, the attackers left the scene towards Sutton Road.

A member of the public helped the man while waiting for an ambulance, he was treated at Basingstoke hospital.

PC Stuart Bond, from the Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team, said: “We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the Queen Mary Avenue area around the time of the incident. “If you have any information, please contact us as soon as possible. “I would also like to remind people to be vigilant when using alleyways on their own at night and be aware of their surroundings and personal safety.”

Anyone with information can contact PC Bond at Basingstoke police station on 101 or by calling the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
