MP Maria praises police for crime drop

Police_MM_outside_portraitBasingstoke MP Maria Miller has welcomed the latest police statistics that show a fall in crime across the borough.

The Government Minister for disabled people praised staff and officers for clamping down on town centre violence.

Latest figures found violent crime in the town centre overall has fallen by 17 per cent, assaults between 11pm and 3am have fallen 15 per cent, and violent crime between the same hours have fallen by 15 per cent.

Overall assaults have fallen by 27 per cent in the last three years.

The MP also praised the work of Basingstoke Street Pastors, a group of volunteers who offer a help for late night revellers through their safe hub at the United Reform Church in London Street.

“It is really good to hear about the work being done by the police, with partners, to make Basingstoke town centre a safer place for everyone to enjoy,” said Mrs Miller.

“Increased street patrols by uniformed police, as well as firmer action to deal with problems at licensed premises and the great job that the Basingstoke Street Pastors do, have all combined to make our town centre a safer place for everyone to live and work in, and visit.”

In July 2011, Basingstoke Police launched Operation Drink Safe to combat late night town centre violence.
