Vigilance urged after suspicious calls

HOMEOWNERS are being warned after a suspicious calls to town homes this month. The incident occurred at lunchtime on Monday, February 15 when a man wearing a flourescant jacket knocked on the window at the home of an elderly resident and asked her to come to the back door. As she did, he shouted through the door that he was from the water board and wanted to check her taps – but the woman refused and he left with a second man, thought to be hiding round the corner.

He is described as white, in his 30s, average height, well built with short, cropped hair. PC Ewan Gardner, from the Basingstoke Priority Crime Team, said: “We have no doubt this was a genuine attempt by criminals to burgle the address, but were thankfully stopped by the quick-thinking homeowner. “We urge all residents to vigorously check the ID of all callers and to immediately report any suspicious people to police.” Anyone with information can contact PC Gardner at Basingstoke police station on 101 or by calling the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
