Police are warning people to remain vigilant when walking in secluded areas after a man was attacked in Winklebury on Friday, August 13.
The attack happened at 5.30am as a 39-year-old man was walking along a footpath by West Ham Leisure Park, Worting Road.
A man was walking towards him and asked him if he had a cigarette. He said he didn’t smoke and carried on walking.
A few seconds later, the victim felt a blow to the back of his head and heard someone demand money. He said he didn’t have any and fell to the ground. The attacker then ran off towards Winklebury.
PC Jenny Mercer, from the Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team, said: “This was a serious incident during the early morning as the victim was on his way to work.
“I’d also like to remind people to be vigilant when walking alone in secluded locations and be aware of your surroundings.”
Police describe the man as White, 5ft 7ins, of stocky build, aged between 23 to 24. He had short dark hair and had a pierced right eyebrow. He was wearing a quilted jacket, light blue jeans and white trainers.
