Academy proposal given go ahead by Michael Gove

Proposals to create a new academy in Basingstoke have been approved by the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove.

On Wednesday, August 31, Everest Community College in Oxford Way closed its doors for the final time.  It reopened today for its 750 students aged 11 to 16-years-old as Everest Community Academy.

Two separate consultations were carried out ahead of the move to find out what support their was in the school community for the proposals, and MP Gove gave the plans the green light on August 17.  The Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) , which already runs six academies, was named as the main sponsor of the academy.

Julie Rose, principal of the new academy, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved with Everest.  This is the next stage in our journey to ensure that all our students get the best opportunities to achieve their potential."

Ian Foster, chairman of the AET, said: "The Government's approval represents confirmation of a new and exciting era in secondary education at Everest.  It is also their endorsement of our ability to deliver the vision for all young learners to thrive in a world class environment, with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them."
