A ‘back to work’ initiative for young people in Hampshire has recruited its seventieth person.
‘New Jobs, New Futures’, run by the county council, offers young people at least six months of paid work and the opportunity to gain valuable experience within the workplace, helping them to find jobs.
The project began in October 2009 and is funded through the Department for Work and Pensions. Twenty-year-old Owen Thurlby from South Ham has found work through the scheme. He currently works as a trainee horticulturist at Newbury Resource Centre and commented: “I’m glad I was able to secure this appointment under the Future Jobs Fund.”
Cllr Jonathan Glen, executive member for economic development at Hampshire county council, added: “The project will increase employability of those taking part, well beyond the lifetime of the project, by providing experience and training in a variety of roles with transferable skills to fit new jobs as we come out of recession.
“We would like to hear from companies who are looking to set up an apprenticeship scheme because the county council has a grant scheme which can help to meet the costs of employing and training apprentices.”
