Police name Odiham teen killed in hit-and-run crash

crime-policemenA teenager killed in a hit-and-run collision has been named by police.

Jack Bland, 19, of London Road, Odiham, died at Basingstoke and North Hants Hospital on Sunday after being struck by a car in the early hours of the morning.

Police today arrested two people on suspicion of manslaughter. A 19-year-old man from Alton and a 19-year-old man from Hook are being quizzed by detectives and remain in custody.

The family of the former Robert May’s pupil paid tribute to a “larger than life character.”

In a statement, the family said: “Jack’s tragic, untimely death has left a huge void in our lives and deeply affected our family.

“Jack was a bright, intelligent young man who had a natural zest for life. He was known as a bit of a Jack-the-lad among his many friends for his larger than life character and fun-loving antics.

“Jack was a loving son and brother who will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.”

The teenager was discovered seriously injured at the side of the 60mph A287 between Crondall and the start of the Odiham bypass.

It is believed the pedestrian was struck by a car driving in heavy rain sometime between 2.30am and 3.30am.  The car continued without stopping and carried on towards Odiham.

A pathologist is carrying out a post-mortem examination today to determine the exact cause of death.  Leading the investigation, Sergent Darren Ord, appealed for people to come forward with information.

Anyone who saw a pedestrian between 2.30am and 3.30am or a car with a damaged from bonnet around that time should contact police quoting Operation Hawthornes on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
