Five-year-old George Satchwell scooped the prize after winning a quiz on recycling held by the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston.  The Tadley youngster took the test during Tadley Top That two-week extravaganza last month.  The AWE schools liason committee supported the event run by the Tadley Children’s Partnership, a group representing the town’s primary schools.

The event, which kicked off on July 5, saw pupils from schools across Tadley taking part in a series of workshops and performances.  These included a dance festival by Tadley Primary School youngsters, and an arts festival held at the Hurst Community College.

And the event ended with a massive circus show on July 14 and 15 in a big top by the best performers from all schools who took part in circus skills workshops.  Lyn Downes, head teacher at Burnham Copse Primary School who helped spearhead the project said: “The aim of the event was to bring together all groups in Tadley that are involved with children and young people from nought to 19 in the spirit of cooperative working.”

The last day saw a roadshow event where businesses, community groups, and clubs came together to showcase how they can help the community. AWE reps displayed a host gadgets and gizmos that they lend to schools for youngsters to play around with.  These included science kits, water rocket kits, a full size human torso model and lucky George’s new bike.

Philippa Kent, who runs the schools liaison scheme said: “We are able to offer a wide range of support to schools on the scheme such a loaning out an extensive collection of educational equipment, providing a grant towards the provision of science text books and organising fun and stimulating science and engineering challenges for pupils to compete in.

“All our work is done by volunteers who want to give something back to the local community that we live and work in.”
