Green Matters: Focus on Kempshott

This month we’re turning our attentions to the Kempshott Conservation Group and more specifically the work currently happening at Old Orchard, Kendal Gardens in kempshott.

The Old Orchard is a fragment of a bygone Basingstoke, a reminder of a time when the area was made up of chicken farms and other small holdings. It is not widely known except to local residents. Approached on foot is an area of mature trees comprising apple, pear, damson & bullace, walnut, hazel, oak, horse chestnut and hawthorn.

In 2006 the Kempshott Conservation Group, with support from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, took over the conservation management of this and two other sites in Kempshott. One of the first things we did was plant a new community orchard with, plums, greengage, quince, apples, pears and medlars.  In autumn 2008 we planted three more sponsored fruit trees and a sweet chestnut.

On Thursday the 11 March at 2.00pm we will be processing the coppice into bean poles and pea sticks. If you want to help us or see what is involved you will be more than welcome to come along. Tools will be provided but please bring gloves! The nearest parking is across Pack Lane in Stratton Park. You can contact the group at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
