Fright Night is the remake (yes, another one) of the 80s cult movie, modernised and moved to Las Vegas, where impressionable teen Charley (Anton Yelchin) starts to have suspicions about his new neighbour Jerry (Colin Farrell).
When his best friend goes missing, those suspicions are vindicated, revealing Jerry to be a very powerful vampire with designs on turning both Charley’s girlfriend and his mother. Charley must stop Jerry before he sinks his fangs into the people he loves. David Tennant (of Doctor Who fame) also makes an appearance as a Vegas magician who helps Charley.
With its tongue firmly in its cheek, this creepy caper is hugely entertaining from beginning to end. The script is funny, with lots of jokes surrounding vampire lore (“Jerry? That’s a terrible vampire name”) and a plot that keeps you laughing and jumping in equal measure.
Yelchin as always is a reliable lead actor (you may remember him as Chekov in the Star Trek remake, or from Terminator Salvation) but the show is really stolen by Farrell, who plays the bad guy with a lot of joyful menace; and surprisingly Tennant, playing his character like an alcoholic, gothed up Russell Brand. Just under two hours of popcorn fun.
