Balloons over Basingstoke heats up

2010_Week_30-8A smoke-breathing dragon will be terrorising Basingstoke next month, but residents are warned not to be alarmed!
The world’s largest special shaped balloon, taller than an eight story building with a tale stretching more than 40 metres, will be the star attraction at Balloons over Basingstoke, which gets underway on Friday, June 6.

The annual event has become one of the most popular dates in the borough calendar, attracting balloon enthusiasts and families from across the country.
Before attempting to break the world record for an altitude flight – which currently stands at 20,000 feet – the dragon balloon is undertaking a number of test flights, one of which is the town’s biggest summer extravaganza.

The Mayor of Basingstoke, Cllr Keith Chapman, is eagerly anticipating this year’s event.
He told the Observer: “I think this year is going to be better than ever.
“It is really promising as in previous years the weather has been something of a problem but this year the signs are that it is going to be a fine summer.”

Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Culture Cllr Cathy Osselton added: “We are both honoured and delighted to be welcoming the world’s largest special-shaped balloon to Balloons over Basingstoke this year.

“This, alongside the many other balloons attending, will once again ensure a spectacular sight for visitors to the event.
As with previous years there will be plenty of free entertainment for all the family throughout all three days and we are looking forward to having some excellent flying weather!”

The event will feature mass balloon flights as well as the popular ‘Nightglow’ – where glowing balloons will be choreographed to music with lasers and pyrotechnics.
But there is more than just balloons, with entertainment including falconry and stunt bikes.
