The godfather of British blues brings his enduring popular brand of the genre to Basingstoke this winter.
Now in his 77th year and with more than 60 albums to his name, the 60s rock star comes to town with special guest and rising blues star, Oli Brown.
Over the years Mayall has shown an uncanny eye for spotting talent to include in his legendary Bluesbreakers band, with luminaries including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and Mick Taylor.
And with such a wealth of experience behind him, the guitarist is no stranger to Basingstoke and will be mixing old favourites with less familiar material from new album, Tough.
John said: “I've played in Basingstoke many times. The Anvil is a great venue, it has a really good sound.
“It's always exciting coming back to the UK, we always use the same bus that we travel round in and use the same gear so it's nice to have that familiarity.
“The crowds are always great too as everyone speaks English, which is a bonus, so when you make a joke on stage everyone gets it.
“We've got such a large repertoire to choose from that every show will be different. We will be playing from the new album Tough but we will also be throwing some oldies in there, so there will be something for everyone.”
The venerable star's band have honed their act on tours of Canada and the US, and John said: “We are doing 100 shows on this tour and that's the way I like to work. I try to work every night and not have any nights off where we are wasting time.
“That way we are only working for a third of the year and then get the rest of the year off, that's better than most musicians get it.
John is as passionate about the blues today as he was 50 years ago.
“Our fan base is encouraging when we see the guys who have followed me around since the '60s still showing up to listen,” he said.
Tickets for the show cost £28.50.
