The Observer Reviews.......Toy Story 3

toy-story-3-cast-photo-11-12-09-kc1When Toy Story was released in 1995, it ushered in a new generation of animation. Not content to let the special effects be the only selling point, Pixar also managed to create a superb story with iconic characters, so much so that Toy Story remains, to this day, one of the best of the computer-animated genre. That is a tough act to follow, but believe it or not, Toy Story 3 has surpassed the original.

The film is set several years after Toy Story 2; Andy is grown up and leaving for college, and the toys are uncertain about their future. A mix-up results in Woody, Buzz and the gang being left at a daycare centre and embarking on a quest to return home. Along the way we are introduced to a host of new toys; some cuddly and friendly, some utterly hilarious, and some hair-raisingly creepy. The film masterfully creates suspenseful situations, tear-jerking moments and heart-warming story arcs, during which the viewer genuinely forgets that the characters toystory3_08-08-2010are merely toys (this is aided by brilliant voice acting and excellent facial expressions). And of course, a slapstick gag or one-liner is always on hand to lighten the mood.

Toy Story 3 is aimed towards all ages, and some moments even feel like they are aimed more at older viewers. Several moments are truly upsetting, though the sentimental scenes are instrumental to the film and not added for the sake of it - if you got through Woody being replaced by Buzz in the first film, and Jessie's flashback in the second, then you will be fine during the third. The abundance of characters also means that there is little development or even screen time for some of the old beloved toys.

Overall, Toy Story 3 is a superb film that looks set to become a timeless classic. A fantastic end to a fantastic trilogy.
