World record attempt in town

A Basingstoke college is set to stage a world record attempt later this month.

Organisers hope to play the longest game of football in history– which will involve a staggering 40 hours of continuous play. The attempt will take place at Everest Community College between 8am on Saturday, May 22 and midnight on Sunday, May 23.

In doing so, they hope to raise £10,000 for Sport Relief to transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people in Britain and across the globe.

Event organiser and academy coach at Fulham FC, Mauricio Rojas, commented: “This is a great way to help some of the world’s poorest and most exposed communities. As a Columbian I have spent a lot of time with people from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds but sport is a great leveller. For many of these people sport brings them a little bit of joy in what can be a very deprived existence.

“This is a comparatively small effort for a big result. We have got some great players already signed up but we still need a few more people so anyone wanting to take part should get in contact. Not just players but witnesses, physios, referees and general supporters would all be welcomed. It is not often you get the chance to put your name down in history.”

The match will be played between two teams of 11 players with seven subs per team.

John Perrin, Everest Community College Community Manager, added: “We are really excited about hosting this event and putting our name in the record books. The local residents have been really supportive and we are hoping that many people will come along to cheer the boys on.”
