Basingstoke group scoops national award

The Basingstoke Stroke Support group has earned national recognition this month.

At the Life After Stroke Awards, held in London, the borough group scooped the title of UK’s outstanding stroke club. The glittering event, attended by Karen Brady, Dr Hilary Jones and Bernie Nolan, honours those who help rebuild lives after suffering a stroke.

Basingstoke gears up to Get Active

A month-long fitness initiative in the borough promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Basingstoke Get Active Month runs throughout July with more than 40 sports clubs and facilities signed up. Offering cheap memberships and trial periods, it is hoped the whole borough will get involved in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympics.

Come along and save a life

Basingstoke firefighters will be supporting a charity drive in honour of a service member.

Crew Manager John Taylor, from Kingsclere fire station was recently diagnosed with leukaemia and big-hearted colleagues have set up donor recruitment sessions across the county. Working in partnership with The Anthony Nolan Trust, an event will take place at Basingstoke Fire Station on Tuesday, June 22 between 2pm and 8pm.

Basingstoke group prepares for charity event

A team of ladies from Great Guns Marketing will be taking on this year’s Race for Life in Basingstoke in memory of a colleague.

The team, headed by Liz Jackson, will be taking on the 10k charity challenge to remember Debbie Jenkins, who passed away last year after suffering from cancer.

Liz, who appeared on Channel 4’s The Secret Millionaire, is a well-known entrepreneur in the town and said she is excited by the event.

Students warned of 'legal highs'

Hampshire police are warning youngsters celebrating the end of exams of the dangers of ‘legal highs’.

Drugs including Sparkle, MDAI and NRG-1 can be legally purchased but still pose a threat, according to officers. The ‘legal high’ mephodrone was banned by Government earlier this year and is now classified as a Class B drug.
