Basingstoke group scoops national award

The Basingstoke Stroke Support group has earned national recognition this month.

At the Life After Stroke Awards, held in London, the borough group scooped the title of UK’s outstanding stroke club. The glittering event, attended by Karen Brady, Dr Hilary Jones and Bernie Nolan, honours those who help rebuild lives after suffering a stroke.

The Basingstoke group was formed just 18 months ago and has grown from eight founder members to more than 70. The group meets every Wednesday in Carnival Hall and runs a fitness, art and social club every fortnight. The group has been honoured for its thriving and growing presence in the community.

Club President Rosemary Norman said: “I have had two strokes myself but I still do as much as possible for the club. The Basingstoke Stroke Support Group has become a really important part of the community and at last the members feel they ‘have a voice’.

“I always make sure I stay in touch with the Mayor of Basingstoke and insist that he visits the group on a regular basis.”

Jon Barrick, chief executive at The Stroke Association, added: “Around one million people in the UK are living with the effects of stroke. The Life After Stroke Awards not only highlight how stroke can affect anyone at any age, but also the impact the condition has on families, carers and health care professionals. All of the award winners have shown tremendous courage in rebuilding their lives after a stroke or in helping others to do the same.

“I am delighted that we are able to recognise and celebrate their achievements.”
