Bike safety campaign launched in borough

A new initiative to combat road accidents involved motorbikes has been launched in Basingstoke.

The Get On campaign, headed by THINK! Aims to encourage borough drivers to try out being a biker in the hope they will watch out for motorcyclists on the road in the future. Motorbikes are only around one per cent of traffic yet account for 19per cent of road deaths. So visitors to Basingstoke’s Get On centre, at Bike 2 Bike in Kempshott Hill, can have a free one hour session on a bike or scooter.

Miles Taylor, Get On Campaign Director, added: “We believe that the best way to get drivers to become more bike aware is to get them to see the road through the eyes of a biker. Through the Get On campaign anyone over the age of 16 can have a free one hour session on a motorbike or scooter with full tuition which will not only give them a great insight into biking but also help develop their skills as a driver.”

The experience includes basic bike safety, clothing and accessories and the participant will be introduced to a motorcycle or scootore with full tuition.

A THINK! Spokesman commented: “Research shows that drivers who know a motorcyclist are more likely to notice bikers on the road and are less likely to have collisions with them. We hope that he Get On experience will help drivers to empathise with the person behind the visor, to encourage them to ‘see’ bikers better and so prevent collisions.”
