Drivers warned of flooding across Hampshire

Motorists in Hampshire have been urged to take care on the roads after heavy rain led to several incidents of flooding and surface water.

Police are working with the fire service and local highways authorities to close roads affected in areas including Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton and the New Forest.

In the Basingstoke area, officers said they'd had reports of flooding and high surface water on the B3440 Whitchurch to Overton road, the A339 at Wolverton, Stockbridge Road at North Waltham and Pack Lane at Oakley.

In Ringwood, Gorley Road, Southampton Road, Highfield Road and Eastfield Lane have all been flooded.  Elsewhere in the Forest area, the A338 at Fordingbridge as well as Hightown, Picket Post, Linbrook and Cupernham Lane in Romsey have also seen flooding, with reports of vehicles broken down in the water in those areas.

At Burley, a motorcyclist and passenger were treated by ambulance crews after coming off the vehicle on Forest Road around 1.20pm today. The police said neither person suffered serious injuries but the motorcycle itself ended up submerged in water.

In the Winchester area, there are reports of flooding and high surface water at Droxford, Martyr Worthy, and at the services at Sutton Scotney on the A34, and there have been reports of vehicles stuck in flood water close to the Three Maids Roundabout.

Officers have asked motorists to take extra care and allow more time for your journey.  A police spokesperson said: "Driving in rain means your stopping distance will double on a wet road so ensure you maintain a safe distance and slow to a safe speed, as there will be a reduction in tyre grip. Brake slowly and gently in order to slow down.

"Rain and spray from other vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen, so keep well back from the vehicle in front, and maintain a safe distance.  On flooded roads, do not attempt to cross the water if it is too deep. Drive slowly in first gear and keep the engine speed high by slipping the clutch. This will also stop you from stalling.

"Avoid the deepest water, normally nearest the curb, and remember to test your brakes after you drive through water by pressing down on the brake pedal gently."
