Roads disruption avoided thanks to quick thinking council

More than 300 days worth of disruptions on Hampshire’s roads have been avoided, the county council has claimed. Gas works and structural improvements cause delays and misery each year but thanks to good management this has been largely avoided. This has been achieved through working closely with utility companies and service contractors to ensure work schedules can be carried out at the same time.

Over the 12 months to June 2010, council figures show more than 300 days of disruption has been avoided.

Cllr Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Environment, said: “This is a significant measure of how the county council is working more efficiently for the benefit of residents. We fully understand road users’ frustrations when it comes to roadworks, particularly when they lead to long delays during a journey. Residents have told us that good roads are important to them which is why looking after Hampshire’s roads is one of the county council’s priorities.

“Nontheless we are doing anything we can do to reduce inconvenience for residents, such as combining work to keep road or lane closures to a minimum, and we are grateful to contractors and service providers for their cooperation and willingness to be flexible that has helped us to achieve this.”
