Whitchurch bridge renovations put on hold

Plans to revamp a railway bridge in Whitchurch has been pushed back after protected wildlife was discovered living nearby.

Work was set to start in early August as Network Rail plans to create a new freight line for goods coming out of Southampton.  But after discovering dormouse homes the company has to apply for a special licence from the Government to disturb the area.

In a statement, the company said: “Network Rail has rescheduled the road closure which is needed to re-build the bridge which carries Newbury Road over the railway in Whitchurch. The timescale has been changed after protected species of wildlife were found on the site and additional work is required to obtain a protected species licence.”

The new schedule means the Newbury Road bridge will be demolished in February next year, and the road will be open in March.  For more information, call Network Rail on 08457 114141.
