Bison net two league wins following cup defeat

BisonLogo-10Basingtoke Bison bounced back from EPL Cup Final heartbreak last week to take home four points at the weekend.

The Herd faced Slough on the Wednesday for their second leg of the English Premier League Cup Final.

The first encounter between the two sides, at the Basingstoke Arena, saw Slough Jets take the advantage with a 3-2 win.

The Jets took an early lead on 03:37 when Michael Bowman scored, assisted by ex-Bison Ryan Watt.

Bison found their way back into the game and Ben Davies got them onto the score sheet at 12:29, only for the Jets to restore the lead when Darius Pliskauskas fired home past Dean Skinns.

Bison again found the equaliser, from a Sam Oakford strike, levelling the score at 2-2 before the first period buzzer.

The second period remained goalless, with both netminders tested by the forwards hunting for the net.

In the third period, it was still all to play for, with Bison looking for their third goal early in the period.

But it was the Jets who scored first when Joe Greener netted in the 47th minute.

The Jets carried the momentum forward and added a fourth goal in the 53rd minute, when former Bison Doug Sheppard fired past Skinns for his 17th goal of the cup campaign.

A determined Bison side did not give up and continued chase for the win.

However, the 5 -2 aggregate scoreline was too much to overcome and the Jets skated off with the cup.

But Bison managed to end their league campaign with a maximum four points, with wins over Milton Keynes Lighting and Sheffield Steeldogs at the weekend.

On Saturday, the Herd faced  Lighting at Basingstoke Arena.

Milton Keynes Lightning took an early lead in the first period when Leigh Jamieson found the net with a powerplay strike.

In the second period, Michael Farn netted the Lightning’s second in the 25th minute of the game.

A minute later, Bison man-of-the-match Viktor Kubenko scored one of the best goals of the season with a shorthanded marker to cut the lead to one. Bison ended the second period one goal down.

Two goals in the space of 25 seconds, earned Kubenko his final hat trick of the season, scoring twice in the opening minute of the final period to give Bison a 3-2 advantage.

Ciaran Long then added a fourth with a powerplay strike, before MK set-up a tense final few seconds as Monir Kalgoum scored with 51 seconds left, after Lightning pulled goalie Barry Hollyhead.

Following their victory, Bison will take the confidence of beating Milton Keynes Lightning into next weekend, when the teams face off against each other in the play-off quarter-finals.

On Sunday night, Bison made their final trip of the season to face Sheffield Steeldogs.

Bison cruised to a 4-1 victory to end their 2010/11 season.

The visitors took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period when Ondrej Lauko struck twice and the in-form Ciaran Long netted the third.

Bison continued to dominate the second period and added a fourth goal when Callum Best provided the only goal of the period.

However, the Steeldogs would deny Skinns the chance of recording his first clean sheet of the season by producing a late consolation goal via Lloyd Gibson in the 55th minute.

The Herd now face Milton Keynes Lightning in a play-off doubled header, away on Saturday before returning to Basingstoke Arena the following day.
