Pratt wonder goal secures draw

Generic_Basingstoke_Town_FC_1_of_1A late wonder goal from David Pratt was not enough to secure three points for the Dragons at home on Saturday, as Lewes salvaged a point with the game entering stoppage time.

Twice this season, Town have been frustrated by Lewes, with both games ending in stalemate.

Town gave a debut to new signing Darren Wheeler from Fleet Town. Wheeler played on the left side of a four man mid-field and brings experience to the Town ranks following the departure of Steve Laidler and Tom Williamson.

Nathan Smart shot straight at the keeper in the third minute following a long throw from Wheeler, causing panic in the visitors’ box.

Town pressured early, but could not get that vital goal with Delano Sam-Yorke unable to get in a shot after holding off a defender.

Wheeler was involved again, laying the ball on for David Pratt, but the striker was unable to guide the ball on target at the near post.

At the other end, Jay Gasson blocked a Lewes attempt from Ben Hunt, but it was the home side who were creating chances, with Frankie Raymond blasting over the bar and Smart shooting straight at the keeper following a great pass from Raymond. Just a minute later, Jidi Ogunbote and Sam-Yorke failed to make another decent opportunity count.

The visitors countered with a weak effort from Ishmael Welsh going just wide and Town keeper Chay Morris scrambling across his goal.  Matt Finlay and Morris had a misunderstanding almost resulting in an own goal, but the keeper showed fine reactions to keep out the defenders header.

The last chance of the half fell to Ogunbote, who pulled his shot wide after good work from Gasson.

An uninspiring start to the second half saw Raymond shoot straight at Chris Winterton in the Lewes goal and Sam-Yorke unable to keep a volley down.

Frank Gray made some early changes, with Stuart Lake replacing Raymond and shortly after Matt Warner coming on for Wheeler.

After 66 minutes, Morris was forced into his first save from a Lewes player, getting down well to keep out Ben Hunt’s header.

Twenty minutes from time, with Gasson and Morris beaten, Lewes should have taken the lead, but the ball fell to substitute David Wheeler and he saw his shot cleared off the line by Finlay.

With 10 minutes left, Pratt appeared to have settled the tie. Picking the ball up on the left side of the area, he took a couple of touches and curled a brilliant right-footed shot into the far corner.

It should have been done and dusted and three points, but as before this season Town dozed off and pressed self-destruct in the final minute.

Wheeler levelled the score following some poor defending. Finlay failed to track his run into the box, but Town failed to pressure the ball in midfield, allowing a cross in to Wheeler.

Dolan and Gasson might have cleared the danger, but the ball was allowed to bounce and Wheeler nipped in to steal a point.
