Bountymen win penultimate game

Week35_cricket-1A decisive victory for Basingstoke and North Hants Cricket Club over Wokingham ensured they stayed out of the relegation zone.

Playing their last home game of the season, the Bountymen went out on a high triumphing over the visitors by 47 runs on Saturday, August 28.

'Stoke were always in control of a game that saw Martyn James trump last weeks seven wicket haul with a new career best of 8-45.

The Thames Valley Cricket League Division One fixture saw the home side win the toss and they elected to bat.

Skipper Russell Droy (65) opened the batting with Martyn James (14). Droy, in 108 balls faced managed to post the highest score of the day in an innings that saw him take ten fours.

Only four other batsmen for 'Stoke managed to strike double figure scores. James managed to make two boundaries in 26 balls before walking after LBW off Wokingham bowler Sathpath Kelum (3-53).

The Bountymen's fourth batsmen, Daniel Coombs (43) fell just short of his half century, scoring 43 off 65 balls and knocking 3 boundaries.

'Stokes middle order were unable to make the same impact as the top half, with the other seven batsmen only able to knock up 26 runs between them with Matt Thankachan (11, not out) able to breach double figures.

By the end of 49 overs, the Bountymen had knocked up 167 runs, with 11 extras added on.

Wokingham's batsmen had nothing up their sleeve that could deal with James' onslaught. First blood went to James, dismissing Rahu Thava (18) when the openers had faced just 25 balls.

Jon Bradley (2-45) helped James cut through the Wokingham reply dismissing Oliver Miles(7) for less than double figures.

James scored an important wicket bowling third batsmen Gavin Duncan for a duck. A resurgence was staged by Wokingham's sixth wicket as Kelum (22) and Jack Fisher (21) knocked up the visitors highest scores of the day.

The on-form James, who had bowled for 20 straight overs ended this partnership, clean bowling Kelum and dismissing Fisher LBW.

James' record taking haul was completed by dismissing the all remaining tail enders. Sanjay Jain hit a respectable 13 but was unable to turn around a loss, 47 runs short of their target after 38 overs, making 100 runs with 20 extras added on.
