Dragons fail to ignite

Week35_Basingstoke_Town_FC-1The Dragons slip to fifteenth in the league after suffering their second straight defeat, at home.

Basingstoke FC went down two-nil to Braintree Town at the Camrose on Saturday, 4 September.

The seventh game of the Conference South season saw the home side unable to get a goal in 92 minutes pushing the Dragons to the bottom half of the table.

Manager, Frank Gray fielded a 4-4-2 formation, with Sean Hankin coming in for the absent Jay Gasson in the centre of defence and Greg Draper partnering David Pratt in attack.

Braintree started the game kicking off a sunny afternoon at the Camrose.

The home side started brightly and Greg Draper had an early chance after dispossessing Michael Alaile, but a poor finishing shot was sent wide.

Strong passing game gives Pratt a chance to put the home side ahead but his shot was deflected over the bar.

Before ten minutes have been played Steve Laidler shoots from the edge of the area, forcing Braintree keeper Nathan McDonald into a full-stretch save.

By the seventeenth minute Braintree found their stride and draw first blood. Nicky Symons lifted his cross from the left to the far post and found the unmarked Sean Marks who steered his header home inside the right hand post.

Week35_Basingstoke_Town_FC_match-1Braintree could have doubled their lead on 31 minutes. Persistence by Jamie Guy stretched the home defence and he released Dave Bryant for a one-on-one with Chris Tardif who pulled of the save. Moments later Basingstoke could have levelled through Pratt, but his shot was saved by Braintree keeper Nathan McDonald.

Moments before half time, Town went down a second goal. A lofted through ball evaded the back-peddling home defence and Jamie Guy raced into space on the right. Reaching the edge of the box, his shot was only partially blocked by Tardif and the ball had just enough momentum to roll over the goal-line.

After the break, Town start the game needing to claw back two goals from a dominant Braintree.

Town’s first opportunity comes as Warner’s corner finds the head of Stuart Lake inside the Braintree box but the effort fails to find the target.

Tardif, in his last game for the Basingstoke, helps keep the score respectable saving a number of strong efforts from the visitors during the second half.

Town failed to find the net during the second half a failed take home any points from the encounter. This places Town fifteenth in the league with eight points from seven matches played.

The Dragons will hope to re-ignite their fire when they travel away to Woking on Saturday, September 11.
