Hamilton ends season on a high note

10-2011-Wk43_Archie_Hamilton_-_Silverstone_PodiumHook driver Archie Hamilton ended his Formula Renault campaign on a high by securing his best finish of second at Silverstone at the weekend.

The point-scoring weekend earned the 20-year-old fifth place in the standings.

He bagged his podium finish in the first of two races when, after lining up third on the grid following a blistering qualifying round, he was able to challenge the front-runners from the start.

The Fortec Motorsport driver challenged hard for the lead on the opening lap, following a terrific start.

He could have pipped the leader at Brooklands, but opted to stay in second place, knowing race leader and teammate Josh Webster was fighting for the championship title.

After taking the chequered flag on lap 18 just 3.9secs shy of Webster, Hamilton was delighted to record his best result of the campaign, which took his tally of podiums for the year to five.

10-2011-Wk43_Archie_Hamilton_-_Silverstone_National“I pressured Josh all the way on the first lap. I tried to find a way by. but I thought I’d just stick behind him as he had a championship to try and win and I didn’t want to get involved in the whole battle", he said.

"I’m pleased for him that he got the win, but pleased for my result as well, a season’s best. I was getting a bit bored of finishing third!”

Race winner Webster praised his teammate, saying: “He put in a good show on the first lap, he got a better start than me as I had too much wheelspin and he was quite hard to fend off. I had to push like hell to pull a gap.”

Unfortunately, for Hamilton, race two did not end the way he had hoped when he was forced to retire on lap 10 with a broken front wing.nity to pass at Brooklands on lap eight.
