Long distance runner wins ultra marathon

Daniel-Doherty-PicATHLETICS: A long distance runner from Basingstoke has won the first Jersey Ultra Marathon.

Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC member Daniel Doherty crossed the line first after 48 miles of running, the equivalent of back-to-back marathons.

Setting off at 6am in St Helier, Doherty had a 30-second lead after the first mile and despite going off course he managed to maintain sub-eight minute miles to cross the line at St Aubin in 6hrs 15mins.

The Irish athlete said: "It's certainly challenging and then you know straight off the rock into kind of a fast route, so your legs are tired and then you've got to try and do a seven/eight minute mile to kind of pick up for the speed that you've lost on the cliff sections so all in all really tough course, but really enjoyable as well."
