Croker rallies troops for Beckenham fixture

Basingstoke Rugby Club boss James Croker said he wants to take home maximum points during the second half of the season to challenge the league front-runners.

The Down Grange side will face Beckenham away on Saturday as they start their new year campaign.

Basingstoke trumped the BasingstokeRFCLogosixth-place squad 23-6 earlier this season and will hope for a repeat performance.

“We missed out on the bonus point last time which we need to concentrate on this time,” he said.

“We know that Beckenham’s pack is a threat. They were last time, they are big and lumpy.

“We need to make sure we have complete parity or slight dominance up front and that will mean the rest of our game will unravel.”

The squad went into the Christmas break after a hard-earned victory against Cobham. December has seen the 15-man team dogged by injuries, with Matt Guilfoyle, Freddie Gleadowe, Neil Posthumas, and Callum Staff missing out through injury.

Squad members are set to undergo fitness tests on Thursday as Croker gears up to select his team.

“We are stronger than we were before the Christmas break,” said Croker.

Basingstoke currently lie fourth in the London 1 South division on 49 points, trailing Guernsey by two, and second placed Old Elthamians by six.

Chicester lead the table on 57 points.

And with eight-points separating the top five, Croker wants to maximise the points haul at each fixture.

“We missed out some bonus points at the beginning of the season which has cost us at the Christmas break because we would have been third. We need to make sure in January that we maintain an unbeaten run.”
