Hospital Radio Basingstoke Celebrates 50 Years

TODAY, 28 April, Hospital Radio Basingstoke will kick off a series of programmes and events celebrating 50 years of radio at Basingstoke Hospital.

To start off the celebrations at 6pm, a special show will be aired documenting the last 50 years. You can listen in live at hrbasingstoke.co.uk or via your smart speaker.

This will be followed by more programmes and events including a fashion show, family fun day and a quiz. Also to celebrate the last 50 years, Hospital Radio Basingstoke needs your help.

A spokesperson shared: “We want to hear about your memories and experiences where hospital radio in Basingstoke has touched your lives. Have you ever requested a song? Did the music or presenters help you with your time at hospital? You can get in touch at [email protected] and we may even ask you to tell us your stories in person and you will get to appear on the radio as part of the celebrations.”

Hospital Radio Basingstoke is a registered charity that broadcasts 24 hours a day to the patients and staff of Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital through the free radio service on the Hospedia terminals, which are installed at almost all beds within the hospital. It is run entirely by volunteers, who regularly give up their spare time to keep the station on air and entertain listeners.

Chairman Mike Brooke-Burkitt shared: “Huge hugs and kisses to everyone at Hospital Radio Basingstoke and especially to you our listeners. This is Chairman Mike alias Mike Brooke-Burkitt, I’ve used different variations over the years, on this the Golden Anniversary of the station. 2022 celebrates 100 years of domestic broadcasting in Britain of which 50 years HRB from its humble beginnings as Mini Radio then morphing into CMMR before becoming Hospital Radio Basingstoke.

I’m so sorry I cannot be with you today but nowadays I’m badly disabled and often ill but that never stops me from thinking of you and wishing you every success with an incredible station from such basic beginnings to what is now one of the top prize-winning hospital radio stations in the UK and that’s all due to the dedicated team of volunteer members who work so hard to make it happen.

God Bless, love you all, happy broadcasting and happy listening, here’s to the next fifty years…”
