Armed Forces Day

Veterans Invites To Armed Forces Celebrations

ONE of Hampshire’s major events to celebrate Armed Forces Day, coincides with Falklands 40.

With this in mind, the organisers of the AFD convoy on 25 June, which will arrive in Basingstoke at noon, are inviting Veterans as their guests. A special classic coach will travel in the convoy and ten seats are now available to former servicemen and women who would like to be part of this special event.

Transport from Basingstoke to Southwick House, near Fareham is being arranged for the Veterans. The convoy of period military vehicles will start at Southwick House, and it will be flagged off by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire at 10 am. Travelling along the A32 and joining the A31 at Alton, the convoy will then take the B3349 for a stop over at Lasham Airfield. The final stage of the thirty seven mile journey is via the A339 to arrive at a welcome event on the showground adjacent Milestones Living History Museum.

Accompanied by the Mayor and Mayoress of Basingstoke the guests will enjoy light refreshments followed by a guided tour of the museum, courtesy of the Hampshire Cultural Trust.

A spokesperson for the organisers, all of whom are giving their time on a voluntary basis, shared: “This is an opportunity to say thank you to our Veterans who will get a very warm welcome from us and everyone who will be cheering the convoy as it travels through communities along the route. We will be delighted to hear from Falklands and other Veterans.”

The convoy will be escorted by out riders of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch, a number of whom are former service personnel.
